Riddler’s Riddles: 25 Riddles From The Iconic Villain of Batman Comics

The Riddler is one of the fan-favorite villains from Batman’s rogue gallery. This eccentric character has once again garnered the limelight after the bone-chilling portrayal by Paul Dano in Matt Reeves’s The Batman.

The Riddler is a challenging foe of Batman because of his comprehensive set of riddles. Some are pretty silly, while others require a high IQ to solve. Over the years, the Riddler has put forth a lot of riddles for the Dark Knight. The riddles served many purposes – working as clues for crimes, bringing forth information about the past, or sometimes just containing aspects about the Riddler himself. Some riddles are more famous than others. Check out some of the top riddles from the criminal mastermind.

A Dark Mystery

Dark Knight, Dark City, is a dark tale featuring the Riddler who goes on a rampage of crimes. Written by Peter Milligan and with illustrations made by Kieron Dwyer, this story starts with a mystery.

Batman is faced with a woman who is brainwashed by the Riddler and jumps to her death. Before she dies, she conveys a riddle for the Dark Knight, “generally, my leaves aren’t turned at night; usually, I’m full of worms by day, lots of words but deathly quiet.” Batman figures out the answer, which is “a book.”

One for the Holiday

The duo of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale wrote the seventh issue of Batman: The Long Halloween. In this issue of Batman, there is a holiday-themed serial killer who spends almost the entire year proving to be a nightmare for the people of Gotham. The killer targets mob figures, which scares the crime lord Carmine Falcone.

Falcone hires Edward Nygma to uncover the killer. In this issue, both Batman and the Riddler try to catch the killer in their own way. The Riddler asks, “when does a killer not kill?” After revealing himself, the killer outlines Nygma with bullets.

The First Time

First impressions are often memorable when done right. Edward Nygma, the Riddler, made his first appearance in Detective Comics Vol. 1 No.140. The issue was written by the co-creator of Batman, Bill Finger, while Dick Sprang made the illustrations.

Nygma is seen taunting Batman and Robin in the comic. His riddle in this one is quite corny. The Riddler presents a riddle, “why is corn hard to escape from?” Batman answers the riddle, “it’s a maze.”

Nightmare City

Zero Year by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo was a reimagining of Batman’s origin story. The elements of technology, inequality, and climate change are evident in Riddler’s plan.

The ultimate act of the Riddler includes turning Gotham into a city of a climatic nightmare by flooding it. The Riddler puts forth a riddle for Batman to solve to save the city, “my greatest of strengths is that I know my worth; I hug myself tightly at every birth.” There is a debate over the answer to this riddle. The Riddler insists that the answer is “knot,” while Batman believes it to be “blade.”

Riddle vs. Jokes

Following the Zero Year storyline, Tom King wrote the story of Riddler and Joker in The War of Jokes & Riddles. Mikel Janin and Clay Mann worked on the illustrations for the story.

In this iteration, Riddler and Joker start a war that causes many people’s deaths. The reason for their war is to determine who will earn the honor of killing the Bat. In the end, the Riddler reveals that there was no riddle at all. The whole thing was just a joke to make the Joker laugh.

All is Fair in Love and War

There have been many portrayals of the Riddler over the years in animated movies, series, and live-action. Cory Michael Smith played Edward Nygma on the Fox television series Gotham. The 5 season show gave Smith the chance to showcase the slow-descendent madness of a former forensic scientist.

This version of Riddler worked with the Gotham city police department and loved speaking in riddles. “I can start a war or end one. I can give you the strength of heroes or leave you powerless. I might be snared with a glance, but no force can compel me to stay. What am I?” – this is a rather cheesy riddle with an equally cheesy answer, “love.”

A Chilling Start

Paul Dano captured a terrifying version of the Riddler, who is a formidable foe for the Caped Crusader in the Mat Reeves-directed “The Batman.” This Riddler leaves behind a trail of bodies, including the Gotham city DA. Every dead body has a clue for Batman, which leads to a shocking mystery at the end.

The riddle left with the first body in the movie has become iconic. “What does a liar do when he is dead?” Many viewers solved this one after the riddle was shown in the trailer, “he lies still.”

Riddler’s Got Jokes

Frank Gorshin might not have been one of the favorites among the live-action portrayals of the green-suited criminal mastermind. But his Riddler did have some comedic aspects in the ‘60s Batman TV series.

Obvious or Not?

The Batman: Arkham game series is famous for its intriguing storyline. The Riddler in the game is not just unsettling to look at but is quite intelligent as well. The riddle presented by Nashton is an eye-squinting one at first glance, “I have billions of eyes, yet I live in darkness; I have millions of ears yet only four lobes. I have no muscle, yet I rule two hemispheres. What am I?”

This riddle is one of the memorable ones because of the struggle people went through to solve it. Once the answer was explained as “the human brain,” many players thought it was apparent.

District attorney Gil Colson is caught by the Riddler and sent to a funeral with a bomb collar around his neck. He has a riddle with his for Batman to solve, “It can be cruel, poetic, or blind, but when it’s denied, it’s violence you may find.” The ticking bomb on Colson’s collar made this moment a terrifying one. But the Dark Knight solved the riddle even under such circumstances, “justice.”

Think Like A Bat

The Riddler messed with people’s minds, not just in comics and movies but in games. The Arkham Knight game is a popular one among Batman fans and non-fans. The storyline is dark and exciting enough to keep the players on the edge of their seats.

It is considered another obvious riddle for Batman, “hope shines brightly in a city this dark; find the source of that signal, and you’ll soon hit your mark.” But fans do love it, especially after knowing the answer, “the bat signal.”

Wordplay on Time

The Riddler is known not just for simple and complex riddles but also for making wordplays while coming up with them. The riddle, “what is the beginning of eternity, the end of time and space, the beginning of every end, and the end of every race?” is tricky at first glance.

It is a testament to the Riddler’s intelligence and showcases his love for wordplay. The unique approach to the riddle makes it one of the most memorable. Once the answer is known as “the letter E,” it seems to be quite obvious.

Genius or Hilarious?

Jim Carrey’s portrayal of the Riddler in Batman Forever (1995) had the fans divided. Some belief it to be an over-the-top take on the Riddler, while some love the ‘seemingly cartoonish’ version of Edward Nygma.

The riddle, “if you look at my face, you won’t find 13 in any place. What am I?” is funny. People can solve it instantly, “a clock,” or spend hours in vain. Whether this Riddler is comic-accurate or not, Carrey did make the character ‘iconic’ in his own way.

The riddle in this issue, “what occurs once in every minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years?” caused Robin to admit defeat. But Batman solved it, “the letter M,” saying that it is one of the simpler riddles by the Riddler.

Take on the Challenge

Edward Nygma has posed all sorts of riddles over the years, both simple and complex. Many fans prefer the tricky riddles since it gives them a chance to work the brain wheels.

But this riddle in Batman No.33 is considered among the most complex ones even hardcore Riddler fans had trouble solving. “I am a house without the head of the head, knitted deep within the trees. A head that lies without its eyes stitched silently to tears. What am I?” Batman was faced with this during the Zero Year challenge. He managed to solve it in true Batman fashion, “a louse.”

Lock and Key

Ever since the Riddler’s first appearance in Detective Comics, he managed to keep the Dynamic Duo (Batman and Robin) on their toes with his eccentric personality and penchant for riddles.

DC Comics

This classic riddle, “how can one get into a locked cemetery at night?” was presented in the Batman No.179 issue in 1966. The Riddler breaks free from prison before getting into this cat-and-mouse game with the Caped Crusader. Batman again showed off his skills by solving the riddle “with a skeleton key.”

Back to the Classics

In the Batman No.171 of 1965 issue published by DC Comics, the Batman and Robin duo again faces off with the Golden Age Riddler. The riddle is considered to be just a pun by many, “there are three men in a boat with four cigarettes and no matches. How did they manage to smoke their cigarettes?”

It is one of the classic takes of the Riddler, with the Dynamic Duo giving him a run for his money. The answer for the riddle, “they tossed a cigarette overboard and made the boar a cigarette lighter,” cements the theory of it being a wordplay.

The Expendable

Peter Milligan brought the Riddler to the comic pages once again in 1990. In the issue of Batman No.452, Riddler indulges in the deadly game of riddles while leaving behind bodies.

The Big Picture

The 1995 movie Batman Forever had both Two-Face and the Riddler as the antagonists for the Dark Knight to defeat. In the same year, a one-shot was released under the title Batman: Riddler, which was directly connected to the movie’s plot.

The Riddler presents a riddle for the readers, “when is a secret suddenly a rumor? When is a rumor suddenly a fact?” There is barely any contemplation since the Riddler answers it himself, “when the proper question is finally asked.”

Deadly Game of Riddle

The 1995 one-shot story of Batman: Riddler might be a short story about the Caped Crusader and his green-suited nemesis, but it does have some tense moments. The life-and-death situations are put to the test by the criminal mastermind.

In a rather sadistic move, the Riddler presents a man with the riddle, “how does an exhibitionist garbage collector break up with his girlfriend?” The man had a knife held to his neck by the Riddler as he solved it, “he dumps her in public.”

A Classic from the Comics

The Riddler left his mark on the comic pages on numerous occasions over the decades. In the issue of Batman No.362 in 1983, Batman and Robin are faced with the Riddler’s word games to solve the mystery.

The riddle is not the most difficult: “what has four legs, smokes a pipe, but cannot walk, see, or talk?” Readers did not lose sleep over this riddle, but it is a classic, with the answer being “a stove.”

In the 1965 Batman No.171, Commissioner Gordon jokingly presents a riddle for the green-suited criminal after he is caught, “why do the inmates call this prison– Fiddler’s Inn?” The Riddler admits his defeat and answers deadpan, “because it’s such a vile inn (violin).”

An evil foe named Garth created a ray pistol with the purpose of transforming Batman into Bat Baby. He expected it to humble the Dark Knight, but it had the contrary effect.

32. Lovecraftian Bat

Many fans believe that a vampire iteration of Batman is the wildest thing that can happen in the Elseworlds. However, there is a crazier version. Mike Magnolia’s Lovecraftian-style comic “The Doom That Came To Gotham” transformed Batman from an urban legend into a monstrous beast.

31. Eliot Ness: Batman

It is as bizarre and wonderful as it sounds, with Ness earning the moniker not for wearing the bat costume, but for beating up on Capone’s thugs with a real baseball bat. Capone did not have a chance against this bizarre new Batman combating crime. He realizes this fact and surrenders to him.

30. Abe Lincoln’s Hitman

29. Gotham By Gaslight

This Elseworld’s plot takes place in the 1800s, as Bruce Wayne wears a handmade Batman suit and protects Gotham from Jack the Ripper. It is an intriguing viewpoint, and it raises the question of whether the Great Detective might solve one of history’s unsolved mysteries.

28. Leatherwing

While some Batman representations love delving into the character’s moral ambiguity, others portray him as pure evil. Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego, Leatherwing, is a vicious enforcer for the National Socialist Party on the dimension of Earth-10, where Germany has won World War II. Leatherwing was a member of the Justice League Axis (Gerechtigkeitsliga), the alternate version of the Justice League of America.

27. Frank Miller’s Dark Knight

In Year One of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight, Batman is depicted as an idealistic crimefighter who gradually transforms into a severe and pragmatic anti-hero. In The Dark Knight Returns, Batman is a calculating and often ruthless vigilante at the age of fifty-five.

26. Jason Todd

Fans may recall Terry or Jean-Paul as Batman, but how many recall Jason Todd as the character? The mantle is up for grabs after Batman is assumed dead in “Final Crisis,” and Jason Todd manages to take it for himself. Todd was just as violent as Jean-Paul, murdering criminals without compassion while still wielding guns and acting as if he were the Red Hood.

25. Red Son

A scary “what if” narrative is told in Red Son. In this world, Superman is born in the Soviet Union rather than the United States, which has a significant impact on the Cold War’s outcome. Superman, as a champion of the Soviet Union, enacts the will of his Soviet overlords with ruthless zeal.

Batman, nonetheless, has a different opinion about growing up under Soviet rule. Batman is an anarchist freedom warrior who utilizes all means at his disposal to oppose Superman. Many of his canon powers remain, but he is ready to go to great lengths to achieve his objectives.

24. Jean-Paul Valley’s Batman

The Knightfall narrative arc is one of Batman’s most famous stories. Bruce is forced to temporarily retire from his job as the Caped Crusader after injuring his spine in a wrestle with Bane. He’s incapacitated and had to look for someone to take his place in the meantime. Jean-Paul Valley, his replacement, appears to be a bad pick.

23. The Grim Knight

Mainstream Batman is adamant about his “no guns” policy. But what happens if he isn’t? As a result, the Grim Knight emerges, a cross between Bruce Wayne and The Punisher. 20. The Drowned
